Rapatessa roiskuu ja remontoidessakin tulee tehtyä virhearvioita. Kun ostimme Havumäen lähes 5 vuotta sitten, ihan ensimmäisiä remppatarpeita talossa oli sähköjen uusiminen. Sähköt olivat nykytarpeisiin alimitoitetut ja vanhanaikaiset. Useamman huoneen sähkölämmitys poltti sulakkeen ja pistorasioita oli aivan liian vähän ja väärissä paikoissa.

Olimme tehneet sähköjen uusimiseksi tarkan suunnitelman, miettineet pistorasioiden tarpeen huonekohtaisesti ja merkinneet niiden ja valokatkaisijoiden paikat sekä pohjapiirustukseen että seiniin. Mutta niin vain kävi että yksi pieni moka pääsi lipsahtamaan suunnitelmaan. Nimittäin yläkertaan vievän portaikon valokatkaisija on aivan totaalisen väärässä paikassa. Arvelen että jos olisimme oikeasti jo asuneet talossa ja nukkuneet makuuhuoneessa, tämä virhe olisi jäänyt tekemättä. Nimittäin makuuhuoneeseen nukkumaan muutettuamme tajusimme käytännössä heti, että tämä ei toimi. Ei sitten yhtään.

Virheellisesti oletimme, että loogisin paikka valokatkaisijalle olisi portaikon vieressä. Jos makuuhuoneemme olisi portaikosta vasemmalle, näin olisikin. Mutta makuhuoneemme on portaikosta suoraan eteenpäin ja huoneen ovelta on valokatkaisijalle useampi askel matkaa. Makuuhuoneesta tullessa katkaisijaan ylettyäkseen joutuu astumaan alas yhden vinon askelman. Yritäpä tehdä tämä pilkkopimeässä. Jep. Kokeilin kerran ja totesin että putoamisen vaara on todellinen. Katkaisijan siirtoon meillä ei tällä hetkellä ole kuitenkaan rahkeita. Ehkä joskus tulevaisuudessa. Asia täytyi kuitenkin ratkaista jotenkin, jotta kumpikaan meistä ei tulisi pää kolmantena jalkana portaikkoa alas ja samalla vauhdilla kuistin ikkunoista läpi.

Meissä on molemmissa vähän nörtin vikaa ja hupsutkaan ideat eivät ole meillä pois suljettu asia. Olen haaveillut Harry Potter-leffoissa nähdyistä leijuvista kynttilöistä jo vuosia. Suunnittelin ripustavani niitä korkean kuistin kattoon. Valaistuksen tarve makuuhuoneemme käytävään oli kuitenkin kiireellinen aamujen pimetessä, joten ostimme kaksi paketillista “leijuvia” kaukosäätimellä ohjattavia led-kynttilöitä, jotka ripustin pienillä silmukkaruuveilla kattoon. Ne ovat käteviä silloin kun haluaa sytyttää ja sammuttaa paljon kynttilöitä kerralla. Ajastustoiminnolla toimivat ledit eivät tässä tapauksessa toimisi sillä valoa tarvitaan sekä aamuisin että iltaisin, joten ajastin-ledkynttilöiden 6 tunnin paloaika ei palvele käyttötarkoitusta. Kaukosäädin toimii kuitenkin kuin unelma ja ainakin tämän valmistajan kaukosäätimet toimivat molempien kynttiläpakettien kynttilöihin, joten kahta säädintä ei periaatteessa tarvita. Tokihan toista kaukosäädintä voisi säilyttää portaikon yläpäässä ja toista makuuhuoneessa, jolloin säädintä ei tarvitsisi kuljetella edes taas.

Uteliaiden kissojen takia aitoja kynttilöitä tulee poltettua nykyään hyvin harvakseltaan. Joskus kuitenkin tekee mieli sytyttää kynttilöitä eri huoneisiin. Kauko-ohjattavat led-kynttilät ovatkin siihen tosi kätevät ja ovat toki myös paloturvallisia. Ne sopivat myös sähkökatkojen varalle, tuomaan helposti kontrolloitavaa lisävaloa.

During renovating a house, mistakes are not always avoidable. When we bought Havumäki almost five years ago, one of the first things we needed to re-do in the house was the electrical system. The old system was outdated and very much undersized for our modern needs. The electric heating blew a fuse when turned on in several rooms at the same time, and there were far too few outlets, and they were in the wrong places.

We had made a detailed plan for renovating the electrical system, considered the need for outlets in each room, and marked their locations and places for the light switches on both the floor plan and the walls. But it just so happened that one small mistake slipped into the plan. The light switch for the staircase leading to the upper floor is in completely wrong place. I think that if we had actually been living in the house by that time and sleeping in the bedroom, this mistake would not have been made. When we moved into the bedroom, we realized almost immediately that it didn’t work. At all.

We mistakenly assumed that the most logical place for the light switch would be next to the staircase. If our bedroom was to the left of the staircase, this would be the case. But our bedroom is straight ahead from the staircase, and there are several steps between the bedroom door and the light switch. When coming from the bedroom, you have to step down one angled step to reach the switch. Try doing this in complete darkness. Yep. I tried it once and realized that the risk of falling is real. However, we don’t have the funds to move the switch at the moment. Maybe sometime in the future. But the issue had to be resolved somehow so that neither of us would end up falling down the stairs and through the porch windows.

We are both a little nerdy, and silly ideas in the house are not out of the question for us. I have been dreaming about the floating candles seen in the Harry Potter movies for years. I planned to hang them from the ceiling of our downstairs lobby. However, we urgently needed lighting in our bedroom hallway in the dark mornings, so we bought two packs of remote-controlled “floating” LED candles, which I hung from the ceiling with small screw hooks. They are handy when you want to light many candles at once. In this case, LEDs with a timer function would not work because light is needed both in the mornings and evenings, so the 6-hour burn time of timer LED candles does not serve the intended purpose. However, the remote control works like a dream, and at least this manufacturer’s remote controls work with both candle packages, so two controls are not needed. Of course, one remote control could be kept at the top of the stairs and the other in the bedroom, so you wouldn’t even need to carry the remote control around.

We don’t really burn much real candles these days because of nosy cats. However sometimes it’s nice to have candles around. Remote-controlled LED-candles are really handy and are also much safer to use. They are also practical in case of power cuts, to bring easily controlled light to rooms.
